LOGLINE - A train robbery and subsequent prison break causes a preacher-turned-criminal to grapple with his faith as he and his gang are hunted down by a determined sheriff and ruthless vigilantes.

TONE - Grounded, rugged, and real — Death in Convict Canyon draws its inspiration from the grit and moral complexity of Deadwood and Unforgiven rather than the polished tradition of the Hollywood western. The world our characters inhabit must feel lived-in: dirt, smoke, sweat, horses, hard weather, rough rooms, prison stone, and the constant physical pressure of an unforgiving landscape.

HISTORICAL CHARACTERS:

• John Chapman: Sunday school teacher, turned opportunistic criminal.

• James Kinkead: literature-loving lawman, worn down by miscarriages of justice.

• Robert Morrison: financially struggling general store owner, Wells Fargo man, with pending nuptials.

• Mono Jim: Paiute Native American, trying to keep his friend Robert Morrison safe.

• Leander Morton: straight-shooting hardened criminal, looking for one final score.

• Big Jack Davis: down on his luck miner, turned miscreant and criminal.
